Association of Women Industrial Designers , An overview
The intent of AWID is to create an open environment where networking between
designers can occur for positions and technical/non-technical questions,
consultants can post their availability, design studios & personnel agencies
can locate consultants and a way to provide general information to all
companies: our own, those we work for and our clients - in other words, help
and educate each other, our careers and our businesses.
The primary focus of our group is to promote the profile of Women in
Industrial Design and to find and offer information of interest to all. The
AWID newsletter and website presents articles in a variety of subjects from a
feminist perspective: management issues, personnel issues, government issues
and any issue of interest or concern to us as designers, design educators &
students, curators and consultants. In addition to staff writers and member
contributions, our publications also boast several notable international
contributors. We strive to create an a single information source like no
other available.
In the spirit of exchange, we encourage all members to submit
articles/opinions of interest to the themselves and membership well as
advertising for their areas of specialty-(areas include design consulting,
education, freelancing, etc.).
In addition to US distribution, AWID's newsletter is distributed
internationally to Greece, Canada, Switzerland, England and now the
Netherlands. Apparently, we've tapped a needed link for the industry - as of
yet, AWID is a one of a kind and certainly the only international
organization for woman designers.
AWID is volunteer based & member-supported. Although we have solicited and
recieved corporate sponsorship for our exhibitions and publications, the
newsletter, website and lecture series is produced and promoted by the
organization. However, to help cover production and distribution costs, in
January 1994 we began setting very modest rates for AWID membership.
