"I had not actually ridden a snowboard when I started my first binding, which sounds bad, but I provided an outside perspective to a project. This industry is really young. At the time, they were only slightly accustomed to using industrial designers. They just wanted it to be functional, 'so it doesn't break.' That sort of mentality runs through snowboarding really strongly. What maybe isn't understood is that there are a lot of different ways to say 'function' through form and shape. Boarders want something that looks functional. On ski bindings they gloss over that technology. Board bindings need to be more bare and exposed, so you can see how it works."
