Picture 1: Bernini suspension
lamp by Ruth McDermott
& Rina Bernabei

Looking to transform your modernist box of an apartment to a lair of pre-raphelite splendor? Well, fret no more, the Bernini suspension lamp is soon to be available in the US.

More of a chandelier than your conventional hanging lamp, the Bernini, was designed by AWID member Ruth McDermott and colleague Rina Bernabei. The fixture recently won an award for a lighting product from the Design Resource Awards competition.

The ingenious Bernini lamp slipcovers a lightweight plastic and steel armature with a space age tyvek material (used commonly in medical equipment.) Inspired by the drama invoked in 17th century Italian church altars, the drape of the fabric has been cut on lines permitting greater freedom of movement. Pinning the fabric to the frame with oversized tyvek rosettes, gives this lamp an unconventional display of jewels.

Produced in extraordinarily beautiful white, Bernini is destined to point to a new direction in lighting design. For information and US distribution contact Riccardo Bernabei, at (212) 721-7746.
