There's just one week left to submit your entries for a chance to compete in the first ever Hatch Live, an exciting new competition format in which designers battle head-to-head with their CAD skills. But there's still a week to submit your entries for a chance to compete at the head-to-head competition in SoHo on October 19th. In our last announcement, we broke down the rules and prizes. This time, we're digging a little deeper into the organization behind the competition. Founder Matthew Sargeant told us a bit more about Hatch Hub and how you can involved:
Core77: What is the background to Hatch Hub?
Hatch Hub: I think the design process today is outdated and ready for a refresh. It's time to shake things up and right now we are seeing a lot of companies heading in that direction. With modern production methods and new design tools I think the way design is discovered, made, and sold needs to change. We're hoping to become a part of that movement and HatchHub.com, launching this Fall, aims to be a design meritocracy, where the best designs are made and promoted.
What inspired you to start Hatch Hub?
The concept behind Hatch Hub came to me after shopping for my sister's wedding present. I realized then that more often than not, the designs that were being brought to the market were out of touch and impersonal, usually mass-produced and lacking consumer involvement and engagement. At the same time, we are seeing up-and-coming designers attempting to break this cycle with intelligent and engaging work, but lacking the means and production ability to bring their product to life on a larger scale. I wanted to create something that not only showcases these designers, but also brings them closer to a community of design enthusiasts that can both influence and purchase their work. How does this relate to the design competition you're running, Hatch Live?
We want to promote emerging industrial designers so we've developed a competition to promote these talents in a very new, community driven way. It's live in New York so people get to witness the design process in real time. We've also lined up some great prizes, including a brunch and portfolio review prize with Dan Rubinstein, former Editor-in-Chief at Surface magazine and two prizes from 3D Printing Company Shapeways. All that along with $4500 in prize money should make it a great opportunity for designers to get involved.
How can people get involved?
For our Hatch Live Competition, entries close October 2nd so we're making a big promotional push with design schools this week. The competition is open to anyone who is a resident of New York, Connecticut, or New Jersey. These restrictions are in place because it is a live competition so people will need to be available to compete weekly in Soho once the competition starts on October 19th. We already have some great entries but we're hoping for many more.
Hatch Live is also pleased to partner with the Shapeways 'Designer in Residence' program. One lucky designer will spend six days working from Shapeways' 'Hands On' space in the 'Out of Hand' exhibition of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. The designers will have access to 3D software, 3D scanners and 3D printers to design and create their work whilst interacting with museum visitors.
