The glassmaking empire of Dave Chihuly is embroiled in a legal battle over the uniqueness of his sea-inspired creations. He is suing two other glass artists (one a former employee of 14 years) for imitating his creations.
Karrin Klotz, a copyright lawyer and lecturer at the University of Washington School of Business, said there was precedent for Mr. Chihuly's claim, that Picasso was able to copyright a mere few lines on a pad because they were so distinct.

Dale, not Dave
I saw the Chihuly exhibit at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago a few years ago. Chihuly's glass sculptures were unforgettable displayed amidst the flora and the fauna.
omg major slippery slope. i sure hope there's no precident for owning an artistic style. so who gets to own chiaroscuro or perspecitve? if artist cannot find their own work within a style, we might as well declare the death of painting and get back to the performance art.
