The NYDesigns design-boosting organization we wrote about earlier this week is a local initiative, limited to New York City. The UK is in the process of putting together a similar organization to assist designers, but one with broader geography: An as-yet-unnamed national skills academy for the design sector will encompass all of the UK.
This design skills academy is the beneficiary of a 1.5-million-pound investment from the UK Government and will be spearheaded by Creative & Cultural Skills, an eight-year-old organization that supports Britain's creative and cultural industries, ranging from the arts to literature to music to design. The goal of the academy is to "work with a range of partners including industry bodies and consultancies to create new programmes which will aim to help young people break into the design industry."
As for who those "industry bodies and consultancies" are, well, if you're reading this and you're an established design organization in the UK, maybe it's you. CCS is currently seeking both consultancy partners and future members of their academic advisory board. If you're interested, an open meeting will be held on June 19th (the exact time was unavailable at press time) at London's Design Museum.
"This [academy initiative] is all about encouraging the industry to give something back and to look at ways of connecting with youngsters," says a CCS spokeswoman.
"A skills academy will help ensure those who want to get into design and those already working in the sector receive the best guidance and training available," adds Mat Hunter, the Design Council's Chief Design Officer. "It is now down to designers and design businesses to get involved and make it happen."
