Yesterday the finalists were announced in the Philips/Inhabitat Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition, and the results thus far are pretty impressive.

The competition sought "stellar examples of inspiring eco-friendly lamps that make smart use of materials, and are designed to work with low-energy LED replacement bulbs," and the brief noted that "Since LED bulbs are low heat, this is a great excuse to get creative with other materials that might be off-limits with traditional incandescent bulbs." Entrants took that to heart, using recycled materials like plastic bottles, forks and six-pack rings to shape lamps from.

A team of jurors including our own Allan Chochinov has narrowed the field of entrants down to just 20 designs, and now the rest is up to you. Vote for your favorites online, and the winners will be announced on June 15th.

Great fun designs. But a seriously biased voting system: they arrange the display of entries so that the ones with more votes stay higher on the display. That's just wrong. And there's no one to contact about that.
