Having also been to Beijing, the experiences that Dan describes are quite familiar. A fascinating city, which is best explored on foot and via subway. Having been 3 years ago, I would love to see the changes that have happened in that time, as even then the city could be seen to be in a state of flux. Fascinating to watch apartment buildings going up before your eyes almost.
I was most amused by the comments on having a brilliant blue sky and no sign of pollution, only to find that it normally is not like that. I had exactly the same experience, with blue sky days, only to end up with the smog rolling in, and experiencing stinging eyes and lungs, and not being able to see a block across the city.
