Thursday in Milan: The Fiera was buzzing as crowds piled into the Euroluce exhibit. From decadent to delicate, Euroluce returns for its 24th biennial, representing an entire gamut of lighting design.
Concurrently, the furniture portion of Salone displayed a collection of this season's greatest hits. Evidence of handicraft was everywhere. Big names like Moroso and Roche Bobois showed off colorful, textural new creations by the likes of Patricia Uriquiola and Hans Hopfer respectively. Urquiola's Antibodi felt chair and Hopfer's hand-sewn bright purple Mah Jong sofa offered warmth and comfort without sacrificing style.
Evening festivities kicked off with a trip to the remote Kartell museum. 40 minutes from Milan, this event gathered the intelligentsia of design. Champagne and conversations with Philippe Daverio, Paola Antonelli, Claudia Dona, Marie Laure Jousset and Francesca Picchi launched the new book " The Design Factory. Conversations with the leading names in Italian design."
Back in town, late night was ruled by the Brits. Huge lines in front of the Established & Sons opening party spilled into the enormous Spazo Pelota, transformed for the evening with cardboard box structures surrounded by the fashionistas and furniture.
Simultaneously, the Royal College of Art kept partying late into the night, presenting a collection of new student work alongside beer, wine, and dance music. Enough stimulation to keep any designer awake for days!
