Do engineers really "design" anything?
by thissedb in general design discussion
Do engineers really "design" anything, or do they just take the idea and the sketches that a designer has come up with and make sure that the end product will work? Just wondering since most of the engineering programs out there are followed by design, such as mechanical engineering and design, civil engineering and design, etc.

Absolutely! I'm sure there are the types that just "make sure that the end product will work?" but there are a bunch of us that are 'designers' and do the 'designers' job' while also making sure it works!
My first reaction: "Oh no you didn't..."
My reaction after reading existing posts on the forum: "Yeah, it gets down to semantics." I would consider throwing in the word "devise" and "solve" as well when speaking of engineering efforts. Mainstream I.D.ers and mainstream engineers are all designers - it's the tool set, goal, and finished product that is different. Whether designers do engineering, I think that's a little more difficult case to make, but this is where semantics, "devise", and "solve" come in...
I'll probably jump into the thread a little later...

2nd generation hands-on engineer (basically studied rocket science, no joke) and son of an artist mother. ;)
It does all boil down to semantics. Design is all about an ideal vision of a product used by imagined people. Engineering is all about manufacturing processes, following the binding technological and legal norms, ergonomics and cost/usage efficiency.
Every finished product had to be envisioned and engineered. So if it was done without designer, the engineer designed it or if it was done without engineer then the designer engineered it.
So yes, engineers do design. And also designers do engineer.
