Mr-914 saw these crazy extreeeeme Hitachi power tools at the hardware store and sparked this power-discussion with a few pictures--they really do say a 1,000 words. How they work and feel are way more important than how they look, but who can help but point out these things look high on Mountain Dew?? Extreme Power Tools...Thoughts? Comments?

That's gonna look so awesome with my armband tribal tatoo!

This design language has been around for several years. A drill received a Bronze IDEA back in '05. Another product in the line was called one of the most brilliant gadgets of 2007 by Popular Mechanics.

The design language is certainly highly differentiated, and when it debuted I questioned it's relevance. But apparently the line is doing quite well and has even caused competitors like Ryobi to react to it. Ryobi launched a new line with bright green accents and more aggressive styling.

If the tools were poor quality or underperformed their competition, they surely would have been a laughing stock. But make a good product and give it a radical design and you can make a huge impact in a market and spawn imitators.

A quick search on Amazon for impact drivers shows that Bosch, Makita and Panasonic have taken cues from Hitachi, too.

what's the point of asking for comments when you're just going to delete them anyway?

as mentioned in the forums, the Ford Taurus was the all-time best-selling car in the US. that doesn't make a design crime correct or excusable. design award worthy? No.

I can understand wanting to market tools to a younger growing audience to increase sales. I also think it's important for a younger generation to embrace self-reliance. But for a pneumatic nailer, I think that it's in poor taste. A tool that is predominantly used by a professional is bought for it's features and not it's 'stylings'. Case in point, I bought the older version of the nailer with the simplistic stylings a week ago because the new version was too garish.

JeffFebruary 13, 2008 12:42 AM

why? i know the same people who look to buy the most outrageous tools choose their razors by how many blades they have, but why?

KenFebruary 13, 2008 3:21 AM

Ugly as sin, why am I not surprised they are selling out all across the heartland of America :o/

Is there a diet version?

jpFebruary 13, 2008 9:18 AM

Man, was this a styling exercise done with Pontiac?

haddockFebruary 13, 2008 10:45 AM

The design is awful, and while still some of the best tools around I think the quality has gone down too, compared with Hitachi's earlier (and beautifully simple) designs.

jPalmerFebruary 13, 2008 6:18 PM

Laaame... don't quite know what market they're after here, maybe monster truck drivers? anyways who cares, this thing definitely looks ridiculous. Screw the dew.
