More details on IKEA's forthcoming PS 2014 Collection: It seems the Swedish furniture giant had hired a gaggle of designers "hand-picked from around the world" to complete the line, and while some are relative unknowns, at least four are not: Both Rich Brilliant Willing and matali crasset were commissioned to add their respective design spins to the youth-based collection.
Brooklyn-based RBW's statement on their two objects, the Storage Table and LED Stool Lamp, are as terse as their designs are clean:
A few words can describe the idea behind our two works: seamless, lively, transform. Other thoughts: simple, active /dynamic, mutate/metamorphosis.
Meanwhile matali crasset sounds off on her two contributions, the Wardrobe and Tray with Handle, with a little more meat on the descriptive bone:
I have designed two pieces both of which I would describe as open.
The wardrobe is a piece that is free from codes. It can be placed anywhere and due to its camouflage it adapts to any kind of home furnishing. It plays with what is hidden and what is revealed and it allows you to create your own design.
The tray is an object made for creating. It celebrates the diversity of life and the way it expresses itself differently from culture to culture. It is an object that allows us to travel and helps us appreciate the traditions that bring new dimensions to our lives.
Stay tuned—coming up we've got some Q&As with up-and-comers on the design squad.
