004-V&A-Two-to-tango.jpg

Late Fridays at the V&A are always surprising and enjoyable—this month's event focused on designers who work in pairs. The evening was full of activities that explored interaction, two-ness and unexpected collaborations.

Two to Tango featured oversized spoons where visitors were encouraged to feed each other from giant pots of couscous, while a 'V&A' version of the memory game, Two's a Pair, took place in the dining hall, with prizes of specially commissioned artworks.

The London Design Festival went out with a bang at the V&A Museums's Two's A Pair Event earlier this week, closing down a massive program of hundreds of events, from the mainstream to totally fringe. Core77 Correspondent Shai Akram blitzed the shows for us, capturing the best in her just-posted photo gallery. There are so many highlights, but a few of our favorites: Hel Yes!, a temporary restaurant celebrating Finnish Design, The Visitor, a show put together by Okay Studio and Friends, Yuri Suziki's sound devices, and Design Against the Clock, Established & Sons real time design studio.

Design Marketo Opening Night.

Jérôme Rigaud and Alex Bettler once again curated a collection of self produced objects inspired by food, but this time its coffee. The event is part of the Food Marketo series (a collaboration between the online shop Design Marketo and Apartmento Magazine) and follows on from a similar show in Milan earlier this year, entitled Fruit & Vegetables Vs. Designers.

coffeeandfriends.jpg

Coffee & Friends by Amandine Alessandra is a plain white bistro tablecloth that reveals its pattern as coffee or tea is spilled on it: designed after the circle stains left by coffee cups, hundred of tiny smiling round faces appear on the fabric, sympathising with the clumsy guest.

Study O Portable curate and contribute to an exhibition of works exploring the role of voids in objects, aptly titled Objects with a Void.. Six designers responded to the brief, 'Intentional or coincidental, voids in objects have the power to define the function and aesthetics of the objects. It's a dismissed yet integral part of design that captivates our imagination.'

Further-Instructions-bw_1.jpg

During the London Design Festival an exhibition entitled Further Instructions showcased new work by Revital Cohen and Tuur Van Balen; two designers with an interest in where synthetic biology and nano technology meets design and speculation.

The show featured two new projects, Genetic Heirloom and Pigeon D'Or and were funded with the help of the Wellcome Trust Arts Fund and the Flemish authorities. Both exhibitions reflect an approach to design that goes further than the artefacts on display and propose fragments of a future, which, although fictional, are not far-fetched. Genetic Heirloom investigates the use of tumour targeting nano-gold particles as hypothetical family heirlooms and Pigeon D'Or proposes the use of feral pigeons and synthetic biology for aesthetic interventions in urban metabolisms.

During the London Design Festival, a magical temporary restaurant sprung up in East London. There are tables with canopies of branches and food foraged from imaginary urban forest served on a very special collection of plates gathered from the people of Helsinki. A few weeks ago, far away in Finland, the people of Helsinki were invited to bring a plate (and its story) in exchange for a lovely meal. The plates collected throughout the event form the crockery collection of the restaurant at Hel Yes, and their original owners' stories are available to all.

Jellyfish Theremin at Sound Interjections!, Yuri Suzuki's solo show at the KK space.

Yuri Suzuki's multitude of experiments with sound fill the KK Outlet on Hoxton Square. 'Sound Chaser' deconstructs vinyl records to form 'tracks' for stylus trains to run along, tiny fish swim across sensors to trigger sounds that get more complex as they dart across each other (Jellyfish Theremin), and a five-stylus record player brings a new dimension to mixing music .

Mark Owens Avatar Suit is one of the selected products from the RCA Design Products Collection

The Design Products Masters course at The Royal College of Art in London has recently launched its first commercially viable, serial run product collection. Curated by Design Products head of department Toord Boontje and senior tutor, Gareth Williams, fourteen products by thirteen designers have been chosen for the Design Products Collection, to be exhibited at the RCA until 7th October as part of the London Design festival.

Entitled 'First Hand,' this collection will give buyers direct access to new design concepts and innovative craft-making. Products in the collection demonstrate the diversity of conceptual approaches and technologies prevalent at the College--not only furniture, but also lighting, a clock, a radio, ceramics and jewellery.

Selected pieces range from El Ultimo Grito's Cardboard and Resin table, Oscar Narud's Keel Stool/Side table from Okay Studio and Marc Owens 3-d computer game avatar accessories, as well as work by more recent graduates from the DP course.

Keel Seat by Oscar Narud

The Norwegian Prototypes show on Leonard Street shows work from a cross section of contributors, ranging from students to established practitioners. The 14 designers were invited to submit products or furniture that could be transported in their hand luggage. The results were placed alongside an explanatory film, howing sketches and short interviews of the designers talking about their work.

Highlights include Oscar Narud's 'Keel Seat,' demonstrated below, and Sara Wright Polmar's 'Peggy' wall hanging system.

Ed Swan developed the Mark Makers table for The Visitor, an exhibition by Okay Studio that we wrote about earlier today. The table is coated in several layers of color, revealed when 'visitors' sand away bits of the surface. The table is starting to get really interesting, as you can see up top. Below, watch Ed make the very first mark, before the opening of the show. A few more shots of mark making in process after the jump.

The Visitor is a collective show of works by Okay Studio and their friends. Okay Studio, based in East London, is made up of 12 friends (who met while studying at the Royal College of Art 6 years ago) nationalities include Spanish, German, Japanese, Dutch, Israeli and British. Only one member is actually from London and this observation, coupled with the statistic that 95% of people living in the city are not from London, prompted Andrew Haythornthwaite (Okay Studio) and Roger Arquer (a Friend) to propose a group exhibition exploring the concept of 'visiting' through objects. Haythornthwaite explains in his own words below:

Top: Design Against The Clock, and Established and Sons event where designers work in public. Pictured are printing panels used by Richard Woods in his temporary workshop. Bottom: Future participants who will also Design against the Clock for Established & Sons.

There is a lot of sharing this year at LDF, it feels as though the 'mystery' of design, (and whether the mystery should exist) is being investigated and interrogated: personal agendas and manifestos are laid open for public debate, (Anti-Design Festival), special processes and techniques are shared with any passer-by (Design Against the Clock), and new collections are taken off their gallery pedestals to very public, very everyday environments (The Established and Sons Public House).

Top: Londonewcastle Project. Bottom: Works by Harry Malt and Stuart Semple.

The first Anti-Design Festival has taken over the area surrounding Redchurch Street in East London. The organisers promise an event that brings 'anarchy, art and antagonism' to 10 venues over the next 10 days.

ADF turns away from commercial outcomes and finished objects, choosing to focus of process, mistakes and manifestos. At the Londonewcastle Project (28 Redchurch Street) there is an 'Open Spike' wall, designed by Martino Gamper, displaying an growing collection of manifestos from various practitioners, promoting debate and critique within the industry.

Correspondent Shai Akram will be sending us live updates of the London Design Festival 2010, which kicked off this past weekend. She describes the lay of the land in her introductory post below. Keep up with all London Design Festival posts here or check in at our growing photo gallery.

Prepping for a day of exploring the London Design Festival.

London is a city of many parts, any resident will tell you that independent, grimy East is a world away from its polished West-side sister. The festival embraces these differences and amplifies them further with the creation of distinct districts within each area.

Alongside the long standing amalgamated shows like Tent, the East is further broken down into stand-alone segments—the Shoreditch Triangle sees shows from emerging designers who have set up their studios and workshops in the surrounding areas, while just around the corner, Redchurch Street hosts the very first anarchist Anti-Design Festival (more on this later).
