Nevada may have Area 51, but nearby New Mexico is getting its own space-related facility with Spaceport America, which is now "officially under construction" and will begin launching Earthling tourists into the wild blue yonder as early as next year.
Virgin Galactic is expected to begin launching tourists into space from the spaceport in 2010, as more than 45,000 people have registered to take a trip from New Mexico. The Spaceport America web site each person will have to pay $200,000 per trip to go up to 50,000 feet into the air before accelerating into space.
Spaceport America was designed by London-based architecture firm Foster + Partners, who state that "The sinuous shape of the building in the landscape and its interior spaces seek to capture the drama and mystery of space flight itself, articulating the thrill of space travel for the first space tourists."
It's unclear to me exactly how airport-like this facility will be. With any luck terrorists will find space an uninteresting destination and the security lines won't be so long.
