We stopped by Dyson's New York launch last night to hear the man in person explain what you get when you drop $299 on a fan. An enthusiastic Dyson took the stage barely introducing himself or the product, he quickly went into details—perhaps too deeply for the average press attendee—but fascinating for anyone who likes to know how stuff works.
Built on discoveries made during the development of the Airblade hand dryer, the Air Multiplier is a remarkable engineering feat paving the way for many new possibilities. He was candid about these but clearly excited, resisting the temptation to divulge any thoughts on the future. Hands on, the blade-less fan is impressive. As advertised it generates a smooth flowing pocket of air, although I can't say I've ever really been upset by the so-called choppy air that comes from traditional fans. Elegant styling and technology aside, at the end of the day you're still spending $300 on a fan.
