As part of a class assignment at Purdue, Steve Visser (a professor of Industrial Design) had one of his classes design a shopping cart that doubled as a homeless shelter. The class tested their design's effectiveness by traveling from the Memorial Mall to the pedestrian bridge and back, to spend the night in the outdoors Friday.
The requirements for this pass-fail project, "were that the structure had to be able carry 50 pounds and then turn into a shelter for the night."

Unfortunately these projects seem to pop up every now and again. While I appreciate that the professors who assign these projects and the students participating are trying to help... The fact is - homeless people deserve a better solution than a cart that doubles as shelter.
What? No reference to DesignBoom's Competition (in the article or post)? Tacky!!
Thats cool.
That is the design comp. currently going on at designboom.com. Its good to see designers testing thier designs on them selves.
That is the reason that I do not design guns.
Cheers
Go Boiler Designers!!!
Another example demonstrating how academia is disengaged from the profession of design.
Another sad example of academia being out of touch with the industry needs. Sometimes it appears ID professors have a personal agenda removed from the best interests of their students.
Haha, yes my back wheel is in the bottom left corner...
I am one of the posterboys for homeless cart design now. My cart and I are famous!
Can anyone stop this nonsense project?
