An interesting use of SolidWorks: At a CAD class at Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering, students used the software to design "twist carts," simple human-powered contraptions that they then raced down the hallways in competition.
These are, however, engineering students; we're waiting to see an ID class do something similar but more design-y....

Why do they have to be ID students to make interesting use of SolidWorks? These students (some of whom will probably end up working as engineers for ID firms) responded to the challenge of human-powered movement by developing designs that likely involved some ergonomic and usability considerations.
So the carts don't have a Helvetica lettermark on the side or beautiful surface finishes. Doesn't mean they're not design-relevant. And frankly, seeing things that aren't "design-y" is kind of refreshing, considering "design-y" currently seems to mean housewares that mimic Apple products.
