Rapid prototyping? Old news. Downloading plans to print out 3-D objects in the comfort of your own home? It could very well soon be a reality. This surely spells out convenience--amidst some form of laziness--but overall, it's exciting to envision a world where pressing "print" yields a real-life plastic part. (The evil nature of pushing plastics? Well, that's a different story.) Newer, more efficient machines use halogen bulbs to melt the nylon powder that gets printed. Popularity soars as prices drop...the NYT reports:
Three-dimensional printers have been seen in industrial design shops for about a decade. They are used to test part designs for cars, airplanes and other products before they are sent to manufacturing. Once well over $100,000 each, such machines can now be had for $15,000. In the next two years, prices are expected to fall further, putting the printers in reach of small offices and even corner copy stores...The next frontier will be the home.

This is pretty darn exciting. I think one thing that is definitely missing in the market is a website with a really nice UI design for the weekend tinkerer to upload their designs and have them shipped out within a couple of days at a fair price. I've done a lot of searching for the right fabricators who could do simple prototypes at really low prices and they are out there, but they just are not as obvious as they could be. I guess I'm looking for a 48hourprints.com for 3D.
