Architecture isn't just for people. For those who missed designer Gary Cruce's debut in Wallpaper, you may now view his Nest birdhouse on the Arcamita website. Cruce designed Nest to accommodate common cavity-nesting birds such as chickadees, house sparrows, wrens, and swallows. A natural structure of bentwood and laminate gives this birdhouse a light-hearted yet sophisticated form, which is why Wallpaper called it "a 21st-century take on the classic all-weather birdhouse." I thought birdhouses are supposed to have a trap door so one can clean out the birdpoop. For the health of the birds. Frustrating when designers are too designy and forget about practicality.
On the back side of nest there is a door that is approximately 2/3's the size of the front panel that can be easily removed without any tools or frustrating screws. What I've found interesting in the five years I've been testing this house is that I have averaged three to four hatchings per season and it always amazes me at how much nesting material those little guys cram in there. I recommend that bird houses be cleaned out at the end of every season to prevent spread of disease and mite infestation. If you go to Arcamita's web site and navigate to nest's specifcation sheet you will see these features.
