Newick Architects' retrofitted solution for an early 20th century concrete staircase involves 1/8" steel plate and seamless tubular railings that together form an ascending ribbon structure around an otherwise nondescript pile of steps. The structure is further dramatized by an overhead 5' x 8' skylight in what was previously a completely closed brick stair tower. The Building 51 stair project received a 2007 AIA Award in Encompassing Art.
