Carbon Fiber iPod Cases
Posted by Allan Chochinov |  6 Feb 2006  |  Comments (13)

"Aerospace" carbon fiber, aluminum, stainless steel screws. Also comes with its own assembly tool, which presumably means that you actually screw it onto/over the iPod. That is sick. [Link]

This is a stupid freakin idea. CF is used for primarily high performance WEIGHT SAVING applications. Yes, it's strong, but the big deal about CF is how lightweight it is. Using it OVER the existing ipod case is just retarded, as it makes the ipod HEAVIER, which goes against the whole idea of having CF in the FIRST PLACE! ARGH! This is the equivelant of putting a type R sticker on some lame ass civic with a fartcan muffler.

nate dwyerFebruary 6, 2006 5:20 PM

its pretty bad ass, but shock resistant?

RobFebruary 6, 2006 5:28 PM

Pretty cool...
However it does high-light the fact that the existing case has a pretty major design flaw given that the original case itself needs to be protected with a second case.

a toothpick has more significance

Jason AndersonFebruary 6, 2006 10:15 PM

Yes carbon fiber is meant to be used in applications because of its strength and weight savings. Which is precisely why I chose it in this application. The ipods are beautiful but scratch very easily so I designed a case that still shows off the ipod while adding some protection. I just don't understand all the people who talk about how perfect and beautiful their ipods are then hide them inside a silicone case. Just my opinion though.

NickFebruary 6, 2006 11:53 PM

screwing it in and out will get hella annoying if you have a portable speaker system.

BruceFebruary 7, 2006 9:17 PM

If you have to screw that case together to enclose your ipod, that will get real annoying by the second time you have to charge your ipod. It is recommended that you take your ipod out of any casing for charging.

chadLFebruary 8, 2006 12:51 AM

I work with carbon fiber all day at work. To be honest, in the next few years will be the new black due to low cost finishing facilities in China. Mark my words, it will be on everything. It is economy driven aesthetic. The guy who designed it better seek a royalty contract fast!

simon crilleyFebruary 8, 2006 2:38 AM

I'm sick of all these ipod skins, bags and covers. When I am king, they will be first against the wall.

JamesFebruary 8, 2006 3:32 PM

I don't get it.

I'd rather see that perfectly good carbon fiber put to use on a bike, but I agree with chadL that this trend will continue.

RobFebruary 8, 2006 9:22 PM

Simon must be pissed he bought a creative zen mp3 player or something. Having a wide array of nice cases available is nice, but this riceboy poser CF that adds weight thing annoys me.

EliFebruary 11, 2006 12:49 AM

This looks like a great idea!
Of course you don't have to take the case off to charge - that would be ridiculous..
I'm going to order one now :)

is this real carbon fiber
