Each year, 30 million PCs are discarded in the US alone, usually ending up in highly toxic landfill mounds in poorer countries. Not only does the production of the average PC require 10 times the weight of the machine in chemicals and fossil fuels, but it's disposal means that a number delectable toxins such as arsenic, selenium, and mercury, are released into the environment. Apparently, a nine-nation research study by Ipsos-Mori for Greenpeace (in conjunction with PC maker Dell's plans to phase out a number of toxic chemicals in its products) found that compy users in the UK were willing to pay an extra $117, while users in China would spend up to $197 for a greener, more "PC" PC.
