Check out the Unicat Terracross, a modular camper rig that looks like, well, a garbage truck. The website for the Klaus-Darr-designed vehicle was clearly written in German and translated into English, leading to sentences like "The optimum layout of the bodies interior was created by the experts for indviduell vehicle manufacturing" (sic), but that doesn't detract from the coolness of the design.
Comes in four different models, ranging from couple- to family-sized, and there are additional photos here.
thanks Roman!

I think I saw one of these rolling down the main street in Taos, NM. When I first saw it I was stoked to see a Unimog in the states, then I was confused by the well-to-do middle aged couple driving it. When I noticed the curtains in the back window I heard this awesome guitar riff in my head. It was a unimog camper! Awesome!
those who are familiar with off-roading and rally racing know that these are not "garbage trucks". they are serious expedition vehicles. this and other vehicles in this class are often support vehicles in the infamous Dakar rally; and they race in that rally in their own category.
