I like things that look good as much as the next guy, but design that doesn't take actual human usage into account drives me nuts.

Case in point, this sharp-looking mirrored dresser from Neiman-Marcus, spotted on ApartmentTherapy; how clean will it look once we start touching it and actually using it? Are we supposed to Windex it after every use?

A mirrored toaster you can get away with, because the threat of getting burned keeps your fingers off it. Perhaps Neiman-Marcus can introduce some sort of heating element.

do you feel the same way about the i-pod?

jjelloMarch 7, 2007 11:57 AM

Oh come on. Cataloging this under bad design is ridiculous. There's long tradition of mirrored furniture. Are you saying we should stop making it because it gets dirty? Go get some windex.

Fingerprints are the new patina.

trMarch 7, 2007 2:44 PM

i don't know about you, but i don't stand around fondling my dressers or other furniture, getting hand and fingerprints all of them. so, i would guess the most fingerprints would be on the front, where you are opening or closing the drawers. or perhaps the top, if you put stuff on top of the dresser. it's like a stainless steel fridge: very rarely do you have to wipe down the whole fridge, every side. the parts that get soiled are the parts you actually touch.

What, you don't like grimy, fingerprint-riddled mirror dressers?

Maybe the piece is a commentary on something. "I'm so idle, I wear white gloves to peruse my lingerie." etc etc

Good catch.

wash your greasy fingers, sucka! ;)

jjelloMarch 8, 2007 8:27 AM

Hate to admit it, but I've actually been musing about this some more....

It's kinda like stilettos - should they be considered poorly designed because they are ergonomically incorrect and can damage the wearer's feet?

The very question is entirely beside the point (no pun intended). Stilettos aren't about function and comfort, but rather cultural expressions of beauty and fashion.

I agree, this past christmas i bought a stainless thermal french press for my parents, mostly due to it's appearance. Though when we used it after christmas i became a lil less in love with it due to the finger smuges. thats the downside to mirror finished objects, they look good but you just can't USE them, unless you wear some museum white gloves, ahaha.

i totally agree, this product is not for those who cant leave one stain behind! i would feel sad to see it get dirty:( its pretty but pretty-ness doesnt help much around the house!
