The latest product design debate to catch my attention over on the Core boards was started last year and has been reinvigorated as of this morning. It's entitled "A Lovely Bit of Plagiarism," started by user Holtag. First, check out this Alienware gaming PC:

Next, take a look at this power washer:

For shame!
Reading through the opinions shows that some readers are bothered; some aren't bothered at all; some come out in defense of the power washer's design; still others sound off with depressing tales that might be familiar to some of you, like ones about the "clients who take a Nokia phone out of their pockets and say, make my stud finder...look like this."
What do you think, is this a design crime or a sign o' the times?

I think the Alienware case is designed to evoke the alien head in their logo. Design plagiarism certainly exists, but I don't think this is a good example of it. I'm guessing it's a coincidence at best. I can't see PC case designers stealing concepts from Home Depot.
Look instead at some of the independent graphic artists who have had their work shamelessly ripped off by retailers like Urban Outfitters and others.
this is modern art :-)
great post!
You may enjoy this website highlighting various pieces of design plagiarism: http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/
And by enjoy, I mean scream at in disgust. There are some pretty major brands there ripping off all sorts of things.

Have you ever had a situation where you said "I had the same concept!!!"? Designers need to face the fact that no idea is original. Its all about implementation and execution.
I think you have to look at the fact these to items are totally different products, if they were in some way related in their use then this could be seen a plagiarism. What you have here is a designer takes influences from different products and incorporating them in to the design. There is also the chance of coincidence, after all the design links quite closely to an aliens head.
This shit is HILARIOUS!!!! Its funny that they copied it, but even funnier, because the design is soo ugly to start with! This made my day. I have never seen such blatant 3D plagiarism.
Copying is supposed to be the ultimate form of flattery right? (whatever). This is crap. It is one this to use a design as inspiration for another but this is so blatant. For shame for shame!
I don't have a problem with borrowing, when it is called plagiarism I feel the author is being a little biased with their view point, but not a problem.
I think BoingBogin had a great quote from Francis Ford Coppola on this matter. Give it gander, relevant, well spoken, & need i mention his works??

i think the design in those two is just mishap. Pc-case design is just design, make it look different then others.. Power washer is engineered, two piece case and filters inside drives it to look like that...
Everything in this world is done somewhere and somehow. We can only make variations. I think birth blind man even can't design something totally new.
