Simon Dale's hobbit-esque family house, built by him and a family member with "a chainsaw, hammer and one-inch chisel" is truly a sight to behold. "Being your own architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land, rather than...a mass produced box designed for maximum profit and convenience of the construction industry," says Dale. "Building from natural materials does away with producers profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings."

The hillside house was framed using nearby oak thinnings, is insulated with straw, mud and plastic sheeting, and uses reclaimed wood for the floors and fittings.
