This may not be news to some, especially RISD folks, but we weren't about to drop the ball on this little tidbit spotted at Unbeige. In response to an art/design school sports-ish post, RISD alum Tim Belonax made clear that "a good number of schools on the east coast (Pratt, Cooper Union, RISD) have sports teams (although none are Div. I to [his] knowledge)." He also made sure to point out the spherical body-part nature of RISD's athletic teams which include The Nads (hockey), The Jugs (womens soccer) and The Balls (basketball). And don't forget the extroverted mascot, Scrotie, who gets crowds pumped enough to chant "Go Nads!"

re: art schools with athletics programs... it really does injustice to both PRATT INSTITUTE and COOPER UNION to be mentioned in the same breath with RISD when it comes to the issue of athletic programs at major art schools. Pratt has a legitimate and historic athletic program, including a national college basketball championship title in 1901, the 2nd longest college basketball rivalry in the entire NATION (vs POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY), had a player drafted by the NBA (Ed Mazria '62/New York KNICKS) and another playing professionally with the AND1 STREETBALL team (Anthony "Half Man-Half Amazing" Heyward '94). PRATT also fields teams in men's soccer, women's volleyball, track and field and tennis. You can even throw in SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN, which operates a NAIA Division II program offering athletic scholarships (and their mens basketball team once ranked as high as 20th in the nation in '03)! FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (NYC) has a junior college level athletic program with 33 games scheduled in their 2008-09 basketball season. RISD only has "club" teams, their basketball team plays in less than a handful of games (some against the local police department), and until this year, didn't even have matching uniforms.
