LG's weird product for toast-lovers with small kitchens

lg-electronics-toaster-oven-combo.jpg

Spotted on an appliance blog: LG's bizarre combination-microwave-toaster. Will this product be successful? You tell us--it came out two years ago, have you heard of it or seen it before?

Seems good in theory. I wonder what's wrong with it? Looks like it may not fare well as an appliance mounted under a cabinet, as many microwaves are. Also I am curious how hard it is to clean. Or if the toaster breaks (as they don't have the longest lifespans), do you have to replace it all? On second thought, maybe I could come up with some reasons why I have never heard of this before.

ChristaApril 23, 2008 11:16 AM

We have one, and we love it!

We have a small kitchen so the space saving size was a huge plus for us.

Geraint KrumpeApril 23, 2008 11:24 AM

The answer is no. This is a terrible product, it is poorly designed. Not only does the bagel/toast tray jam and not shut properly, but the 'innovators' who unleashed this tragedy into the marketplace failed to realize that a combo item is only useful if it can be used simultaneously. That's right; one would think they could boil some soup while also toasting a crust of bread for lunch. Sorry. Oops. Everyone in the office wait in line while I run two cycles of raison bread and last night's Pad Thai.

its not a LG...but we have one. bought it about 3 1/2 years ago...and the toaster part broke after 2. it could still toast, but the mechanics broke. and the area above the toaster part is a bit warped...its as if the toaster melted it.
i really needed the space-saving aspect of it and i liked the look, but im pretty disappointed overall. (and back to a cheap little toaster that i have to pull out of a cabinet every morning.)

RyanApril 23, 2008 1:38 PM

I actually think it's a good product, but your right I've never heard of it and its been out for two years, something somewhere has gone wrong

the.arcticApril 23, 2008 2:30 PM

I almost bought one last year. However, my problem wasn't with the toaster, but with the dial control. I really hate the "design" trend toward decreased functionality of a dial over a keypad. That's what all microwaves used to have back in the days of yore. Who wants to bet that this step backward isn't out of any desire to improve the devices, but because they're cheaper/easier to produce than the numeric pads.

I should add that the microwave I did end up getting has a sister unit with one of those god-forsaken control knobs. So when I want to cook something on 50% power I have to press the "cook power" button SIX TIMES as it counts backward from 10 to 5. On the other unit you hit the power button, then dial in what you want, then hit time, and then dial in again. What was wrong with hitting "cook power," "5," plus the time and "start"? That's only 5-6 buttons if you're cooking for less than 10 minutes.

My mom actually has the beast. and a 4 slice toaster as well. the all in one thing was a little overwhelming. there is a crumb tray that pulls out of the bottom like most toasters. even though it is enclosed it doesn't seem to work any miracles in the time department. plus they fan keeps running for a little while even after it is done. if you are that pressed for space or impartial it will do the trick.

MayaraApril 23, 2008 3:48 PM

We have a different brand of microwave-toaster, much like that one, and love it. Before, our toaster never got used and sat in a cabinet, but now it's out on the counter without creating additional clutter (we were replacing an older microwave), and it gets used regularly. And the front-loading toaster is much nicer than the top-loading ones.

Andrew TwiggApril 23, 2008 3:57 PM

I've actually had a different model of this toaster/microwave combo since I think 2004. The microwave part is great and the toaster part is pretty good.

We don't toast a lot in our household so a dedicated toaster would make no sense. While I often believe hybrid devices give the worst of both and the best of neither, this one actually works and I'm very happy with it.

You can't use them both at the same time, so if you like to synchronize your toasting and microwaving, this isn't for you.

Oh, Janet, there's a crumb tray under the toaster part so it's not hard to clean. You can't see it in the pic because it's below the toaster compartment, blocked by the door when it's open.

AlexApril 23, 2008 6:04 PM

I've had this toaster for years... whats the big news? It works pretty good, but you can't toast and microwave at the same time, and the microwave is rather weak. 900 watt I believe. Decent appliance tho, great for saving space.

NathanApril 23, 2008 7:22 PM

My sister and I have had these for over two years. Awesome. We call it the "Toasterwave"...

catherineApril 23, 2008 9:35 PM

Darn - wish I'd seen this last week, my microwave and my toaster kicked the bucket at the same time. This would have been the ultimate (if weird) replacement.

EadwacerApril 24, 2008 8:27 AM

You don't get a multitasker by bolting two unitaskers together (hand tools like Swiss army knife excepted). If you want something like this, why not build a toaster _oven_ / microwave. Besides, how far will it shoot your toast across the kitchen?

cbyrdApril 24, 2008 8:33 AM

I have this product, it works great, we've never had any problems with it. It's very convinient and it saves a lot of space.

KC DunstanApril 24, 2008 10:21 AM

I own it. I have a pretty tiny kitchen, so I was all over the micro-toaster combo. So far, so good.

KenApril 24, 2008 10:57 AM

I like the idea of combining similar function items into one. I could imagine myself purchasing a microwave like this, but I can only imagine what kind of power it would draw when both functions are used simultaneously.

lee drotmanApril 25, 2008 11:39 AM

This is an excellent machine as well as a great concept - I've owned it for about 2 years and it works great - perfect toast perfect popcorn and very
clean looking!!

TraciApril 26, 2008 2:21 PM

i've owned one for a year.. i guess I didn't think it was weird. i live in a small apartment in boston and i don't have much counter space. i think its great and haven't had any problems with it.

granite worktopsJune 11, 2008 11:27 AM

I must admit.. This is one cool device!

I like it!
