Allison Arieff's new Living Design in the NYT is a nice overview of the contribution of design, as she says - functional, playful, doing good, responsible, comfortable, useful. And then a sad comment from a reader
How important is design to me? I was willing to pay 3 times the price for my toaster (Siemens, designed by Porsche), which in addition to making toast, very well, is also a beautiful object to grace my kitchen, so providing visual pleasure as well as a purpose...
Gah! Phhtphht! Missing the point! Posturing and snob-appeal was not in her list! There's the design meme for ya - even when someone steps forward and explains that design is about elegant problem solving, someone else steps forward and uses that as a platform to (pretend to) agree and tell us that design is how they prove they are better than the rest of us!
THREE TIMES THE PRICE (and from Porsche)?

Why the surprise. Plenty of posturing in some of the stuff posted on Core: http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/shots_by_jp_meulendijks_4518.asp
