Hot on the heels of our entry about the Soap Bank, a reader sent us a tip for another brilliant way to recycle soap. Unfortunately the video is unembeddable, but do click here to see it, it's short and sweet.

thanks Judson!

Not sure I get it. How does that save soap? What happens when you end up with the same small amount of soap? And what happens with the soap that was carved out of the yellow bar? (unless the bar is made that way, I don't know...)

bMarch 31, 2008 05:17 PM

this is an idiotic idea and a complete waste of time.

Bill EcclesMarch 31, 2008 06:18 PM

Well as soon as I saw that video, I knew I'd struck gold! I went home and immediately started to try to use my new bar of soap from the inside out.

But, alas! I have been unsuccessful. I can't really scrub my pits using the interior of the bar, and getting any kind of real carving action out of the only parts of my body that are small enough to make the slot is really, really difficult, but I might get some nipple rings to make it easier.

What, oh, what am I doing wrong?

In order to create the cavity for the old soap in the new one, do you not have to scrape out the middle, thus wasting all that soap and negating the purpose of saving that last part of the soap in the first place?

emuzingMarch 31, 2008 09:47 PM

Stop! You guys are designing too much. Try this (no special design required):
Wash with new soap.
Rinse new soap.
Rinse old soap.
Place old soap on top of new soap.
Come back & wash again tomorrow.
Let me know how it goes.

i think he's being funny! isnt it the same waste, or even more? to carve that much soap out to make the slot, or even buying a smaller amount of soap.. by buying smaller amount of soap youd waste more packaging materials.. or even it wouldnt change a thing in this wild wasting world.

marcusApril 1, 2008 01:57 AM

But this seems to result in an unending cycle since the old piece of soap is the centre and is slotted back into the centre. Maybe what we need is a drain friendly recyclable centre manufactured into soap.

fredApril 1, 2008 07:44 AM

And the cut out soap from the orange bar goes where?

JAYB.April 1, 2008 10:13 AM

What am I seeing there.. The new bar shaved out to place the old in? Makes sense.

FrankApril 3, 2008 01:28 PM

The Orange Soap would be manufactured with the slot in it. When it is almost gone, slip it into a new slotted bar, repeat.

re Frank

exactly!
