The much anticipated NYT 9th Annual Year in Ideas was published in yesterday's New York Times Magazine. Featuring the year's most "noteworthy notions" in Arts, Business, Culture, Design, Health, Natural Science, Politics & Policy, Social Science, Sports and Technology, the review celebrates our accomplishments in 2009 while reminding us of how quickly it all flew by. Is it already time to get into gear for 2010?
We, of course, are most interested in the Design section, but with disciplinary boundaries as blurry as they are, we're pleased to see design projects in a number of other categories, including the Cul-de-Sac ban in Politics & Policy and Man-Made Greenery in Technology. Other favorites are the Bicycle Highways (illustrated above by Reinhard Hunger) connecting the suburbs to the city center in Copenhagen and Artificial Car Noise, a proposal to add fake noise to our new, quieter hybrid cars to warn pedestrians of approach. The accompanying animation by Peepshow Collective suggests that this might be a wonderful opportunity for composers and sound designers—is Brian Eno on this yet?
