First it was "no cellphones," now it may be "no laptops." BoingBoing recently spotted this restriction at an Austin restaurant.

We here at Core wonder, will this be a trend, or an anomaly? Have any of you, in other cities, seen similar things? If so, please respond in the comments. Thanks!

In all fairness, this isn't at a restaurant, it's at the convention center. It's geared more at people who aren't buying any food or drink at all.

I think that's actually from SXSW itself at the convention center, as they're pretty keen about making sure there'sroom to eat when necessary, but what else can you do when surrounded by nerds? =)

This sign is in the Austin Convention Center during SxSW Interactive... realize there were about 4 tables in front of a snack bar... The convention center is about 5 city blocks of indoor space and covered by free wifi... so there is plenty of laptop useable spots to sit -- fewer spots to get a sandwich before the next conference session. Dont get the impression Austin is not tech-friendly :)

How about getting facts before you start making accusations?

The fact is, this is a cafeteria at the 2007 SXSW Interactive Conference in Austin, on the third floor of the Austin Convention Center. All they did was reserve a table for dining only. There were lots of other tables that were crammed with laptop users.

But that's not nearly as interesting, is it?

I think this is going to quickly become more commonplace. I see more people using laptops in restaurants -- not just cafes and coffee shops -- and I imagine more proprietors will take steps to discourage people from occupying tables for hours while nursing a cup of coffee. But it might not be as overt as this sign: one cafe I frequent recently installed a bench all along one wall, just to cover the wall outlets and thereby discourage laptop use.

That's actually at SXSW in the Austin convention center. It's a little misleading to call it a restaurant. More of a situational necessity.

With free WiFi *everywhere* it was really easy to plop down anywhere and hop in the interweb.

I will confess that I had my laptop on the table at Champs for a short time to look up schedules.

i saw a similar sign in a new york city cafe
