Methinks this should've operated on seed-planting rather than sun-starving, but a cute idea non-the-less. Here's designer Romain Duclos:
You have no time to garden... "Jardin à la Francaise" is an innovative concept allowing people to personalize a corner of greenery according to their mood. This kit gives an elegant and refined style to your garden in a few days, whether it is for an event, a reception or simply to imagine a short-lived decoration. Explanations: Place synthetic field elements on the grass by following a figure on the guide, or invent one of your own! Leave from 10 to 12 days, removeā¦and here is your printed motif field! Your garden is personalized and will stay with this creation for approximately fifteen days.

This technique has been used quite a bit already, nothing new really. The one public project I've seen was in Denmark at the Roskilde Festival in 2005, where design students Sabine Storm, Louise Ry Mathiasen and others made heart shapes in sun starved grass for visitors to enjoy. Any opaque plastic foil with a shape will do the same effect.
