
Baseball doesn't sound as dangerous as American football or rugby, but anyone who has taken a fastball to the head will tell you differently from his hospital bed. Enough of these instances have prompted even minor league baseball officials to require helmets that can withstand these kinds of impacts.
Enter Ohio-based Priority Designs, which worked with sporting goods manufacturer Rawlings to develop the S100 helmet. The S100 uses a composite insert within a polypropylene frame to weather shots of up to 100 miles per hour--not bad when you consider the average baseball helmet will reportedly dent at a lowly 70 m.p.h.
