Perhaps one day, after a definitive link between cell phones and some kind of fatal brain disease is proven, people will look back on photos like the one above and say "What idiots!"

It's always easy for us to say that ideas were "bad" when we feel disconnected from them through the passage of time, a gap in culture, or other reason. We are conditioned to believe that designs must evolve and that the current model is inherently better than a past one. This is not always true. Many of our modern technologies cause illness, increase pollution, and decrease face-to-face social interactions.
Our modern-day smirking reveals our lack of respect for the work of our forbears and an undeserved assumption that today's inventions are superior.
