Blue Iris, or Pantone 18-3943, has been named color of the year for 2008.
Pantone, Inc., the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, selected PANTONE 18-3943 Blue Iris, a beautifully balanced blue-purple, as the color of the year for 2008. Combining the stable and calming aspects of blue with the mystical and spiritual qualities of purple, Blue Iris satisfies the need for reassurance in a complex world, while adding a hint of mystery and excitement.

Oh don't joke, iris is a very meditative color. But seriously I have never been able to understand how Pantone can pick a color of the year. This color then goes on to be applied in mainstream fashion, house design and paints. I can't wait for next years doozy.
Color is a 3-dimensional entity. RGB, hue/saturation/brightness, YUV, L*a*b, no matter what you call them. Giving a magic name to a color doesn't change that fact.
Let's at least use a color system that takes away arbitrary names for colors. I like NCS, but there must be others that are easy to understand.
