Heat-wise, the past few days have been hell in Manhattan; and as the sun beats down, we crank the A/C, and our electricity bills rise, your correspondent was inspired to do a two-hour web search seeking a way to connect solar panels to the air conditioner. If the sun wants to crank out so much goddamn energy, maybe it wants to power our A/C.
Unfortunately there's no easy way to do that, but researchers at Tokyo's Nihon Telecommunication Systems Inc. have devised a tinted window that both shades occupants and generates juice from the sun. Right now the power stored is only enough to power a cell phone or a PC, but that's a step in the right direction!
