UK broadcaster BBC2 will be airing Philippe Starck's School of Design next year. The latest in a long line of "reality" shows, this one will pit 25 would-be designers against each other in a chance to win a six-month placement in Starck's Parisian agency.
"...This show can be a wake-up machine. It will also show that no one needs to be a genius to be creative. Creativity is accessible," said Starck.
"I hope these people will be good because if they are good, definitively, that will change their lives and hopefully improve other people's lives."

I hope this show is about design and not about how outrageous and outspoken Philippe Starck can be.
So... Design is dead but not so dead that he won't make a show about it?
VH- nope, it's definitely dead now, he's just gonna kick it around and then pick its pockets.
Starck's retirement from design is making Jay-Z retirement from Hip-Hop look like an eternity.
It's hard enough for designers to find decent jobs, now we have to compete on Reality Shows for them?
Come and be the next Great British Designer..... in Paris?
geezz, this is the person who said "design is dead"
/\ Exactly my idea to....the bastard. Kill KIll KILL!
BTW I tought the BBC made quality television shows...like Top Gear and planet Earth
Wow, people really took his "design is dead" comment literally. I think that comment was more directed at how styling has become synonymous with "design" when in fact they are not the same thing. I think what Starck's point was is that to make something pretty isn't designing. He said the designers of the future are the personal trainers and dietitians etc. I think his point was that they help people and make peoples lives better. I think his point was that design often is no longer about helping people and making their lives better, but has now become all about making the next iMac styling rage. I mean when you think about it, how many of us professional designers actually go to work to solve a problem? I don't. I spend my days with people saying, "lets make it look cool!"
Honestly, I tried to be on this show. You have to be a UK resident, though. Too bad for Philippe, I guess.
great idea, I think it will be good to have online web translation )
If you have to be on his show, you likely won't become a good designer. Designers don't need TV shows, they don't need mentors that are designers, they just need perceptivness, problems to solve and advice along the way. The voyeurism and vanity of a reality show taint the purity of thought involved with design...Seeking mentorship from an old designer like Philippe is like asking your parents for advice, culture changes faster than you think. I'm not sure if I'll want to watch those wannabe designers and hipsters brown nose the man..But I'm sure that at some point my cultural hardwiring will tempt me..
