Philippe Starck may have famously said "I believe in general that my job is absolutely useless" at the last TED Conference, but the designer-at-large is at it again: witness his new grommet-like watch for Fossil, which retails for $110.

I'm sorry but this is already outdated.

I absolutely love this, and when I saw it I expected it to be more like $1100 rather than $110, I only wonder where I'll be able to get it, and if it'll fit me (big wrists :) )

I think is a fantastic design. watch design has for long been focussing on layouts and information design (which no doubt is imp) but this design tries to poke a hole ("literally") at that perspective to watch design. Also i feel that the interplay of material choices and colors lends it an interesting character. Seeing you skin through the watch would also inspire an interesting interaction between the product (symmetry of form and material) the user (skin) in both visual and ergonimic sense.

Stark did not design this watch..his head might have gone up and down and said yes but that is about it. This only comes from the fact that I know fossil has talented in house design that submits these designs. No you will probably not know them but they also are pretty much responsable for 99% of things that are so called touched with the hand of stark. One great example of this is stark LED watch where tiny light tubes are used to display the time (100% not stark brain power). And also the new curved lcd watch with the controls co-molded in the strap (ring shaped layout). the strap did not come from his pen but from designers that design for the "STARK BRAND NAME" at fossil. Yes it is a very cool watch but applaud the real brain power that came up with this watch and not the name that is stuck on the box.

This was definitely not designed by Starck.. for a start look at my mates concept zero watch at www.timcollinsdesign.com designed a couple of years ago.. very similiar idea?

mild cleverness != good design. The circle dominating the center of my watch face would make me focus on my hairy wrist.

TastycakeMarch 27, 2007 3:29 AM

This watch looks like a lifesaver with a strap. Thumbs down. And btw Violent is absolutely correct. No big designer designs anything anymore.
