We are facing a pandemic of 'designed stuff' and we have reached a contamination point, a crisis for Design, argue David Carlson and Brent Richards.
"Why are we not more pertubed and disturbed, why are we so complacent and tolerant? Should we not be calling for a guerrilla war against 'designerism', antiviral campaigns against the design establishment or do we need a revolution to cut the ties with the hero's of 20th Century Design?"
The diagnosis, they say, is not making Design better, but making Design matter!

Have designers like Tim Brown of IDEO and Dieter Rams been saying this for years? Come on guys catch up!
I've seen so many of these manifestos and call to arms. To me it's self-important rantings "designed" to generate a reaction. I agree with AceDude's comment, Dieter Rams and others have been advocates of this ideal for years. Also, just because as a designer you occupy yourself with "designy" things doesn't mean the general public is over-saturated with it. Robert Thurman the Buddhist scholar once gave a talk to a group of designers and entertainment types, he imparted this piece of wisdom "you might feel like what you do is frivolous or wasteful, but what you create gives people relief from the day, a moment of happiness in a difficult world."
I say, yes we need to be responsible designers and accountable for the waste we produce, but stop taking "yourself" so seriously.
Spot on Derek!
