Above is a photograph of a new conceptual dashboard by automotive interiors supplier Johnson Controls, soon to be presented at the International Motor Show 2007. While the bulk of the dashboard is ho-hum, at least one new detail is worth looking at, the speedometer gauge. While the gauge to the left of it has the conventional center-mounted needle, the large gauge has a "ring pointer," where the pointer is a graphic on a clear, rotating ring. This simple design innovation frees up the center of the dial so you can display more information.
Below is a photograph of the "ring pointer" concept in actual production on the new Chrysler Pacifica. Why didn't anyone think of this sooner?

thanks Keith!

SiemensVDO and Mercedes thought of. Check out http://www.siemensvdo.com/press/pictures/interior/sv-pp-mercedes-e-ringpointer-light+generating+foil-lcd-20020305.htm
lame, any kind of innovation in the auto industry gets way too much attention. although it is needed, badly. Conundrum.
Oh those ellipses, they look so retro 1994!
Are you kidding me? This is old hat. One example is the Chrysler Pacifica cluster with a large LCD within the spedometer.

they did, i was in a chrysler pacifica the other day and it had just that. this isn't really a new "innovation," it's definitely been seen in, if not a lot, a modicum of other cars. It also raises some questions about the readability of the speed with all that distraction going on right in the middle of your dash
Mercedes has had this for years int their dashboards.
real common in the 50's dude, jeze
because it looks retarded?
You mean like the MB CLS?
Mercedes-Benz has been doing this for years. Their speedometers feature an LCD MFD in the center.
This is already in use on the current Volvo S80 for both the speedometer and tach, the centers are multipurpose LCDs showing odometers, gear, temperature, time, fuel...
