There's plenty to admire about the current resurgence of making, crafting and DIY, just so long as we all agree that knowing how to do a thing before you start doing it is usually a good idea. Otherwise, you end up with something like this photo gallery at Jalopnik, of the results of too much enthusiasm and not enough know-how in the homebrew auto customization field. Some of the mistakes are only obvious to bona fide automotive gear heads. Others, like the arc welder debacle above, are universally intelligible.
