In the 'States electric blankets and hot carpets are largely a thing of the past, but in earthquake-prone Japan, where homes are often built without insulation due to the problems it creates during temblors, the heating-element product category is still alive and well, particularly during the winter months.
Last week Panasonic released the "No-Constraints Carpet," a boa-like heating element with the type of fur you often see splashed with buckets of red paint. (Animal activists can relax this time, it's faux.) Available in lengths of 5 or 23 feet, the device doesn't waste its heat along its entire length; smart sensors only warm up the actual part you're touching. And winter-loving drag queens will be thrilled to see they come in a variety of furs.
