The NASA Ames Research Center sponsored some space colony summer studies in the 1970s. The Space Colony web site has a collection of illustrations of their ideas, including the cutaway view of a Torodial Colony shown above.

I remember this stuff as a kid and really looked forward to the 21st century when we expected to see this stuff coming together.
What happened? We seem so focused on the micro instead of macro visions now.
There is acctually a model (a 6-8ft section) of the colony posted here,
in Salzburg Austria of all places, on
view as part of their permanent SPACE exhibit in the museum " Haus der Natur". Been there probably since the mid 70's....
Anyone seen any other 3D models of these scenarios anywhere?
honestly, i feel that it would be REALLy freaky to have someone say to you " don't go there son, you might fall off the edge. And Its even weirder to look up and see your friend's house in the distance instead of the sky.
I remember seeing this stuff as a kid, too, and thinking it'd never happen. Turned out I was right. And I'm kind of glad, too. What idealized American society, exactly, is living up there? Did they just put the suburbs into space? And where the heck can a guy get a Slurpee?
