DARPA plans to electronically tag every soldier with the Individual Force Protection System (IFPS) as an alternate to battery-intensive GPS devices and bulkier equipment such as the Land Warrior in place today. The tags could either be embedded in the soldier's uniform or worn around the neck with their dog tags. A report published in late 2007 states a single unobstructed receiver can be detect a tag from up to 150km and multiple receivers dramatically increase the accuracy. Lets just hope they get the encryption right.
