
On a darkened on-ramp to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, I once hit a pothole so deep that it dented the rim of my Integra. Years later, on a stretch of Lafayette Street near City Hall, I hit another pothole with so much force that the Golf I was driving freaking deployed the passenger-side airbag. Google the word "pothole" and the number one link is to Wikipedia's description. The number two link is to New York City's Department of Transportation website.
The NYC DOT's Pothole Gang (probably not their official name) fixes up to 4,000 potholes a day. Their goal is to fix them as fast as they find them. And to find them, they rely on agitated motorists like me taking the time out of our day to report a pothole's location to the DOT's website.
Designer Ajay Rao doesn't live in New York (he hails from India), but he's proposed an interesting way to passively create a pothole database. As an entrant in Local Motors' BMW Urban Driving Experience Challenge, a design competition seeking ways to turn BMWs and MINIs into "a socially responsible machine that contributes to our global well-being," Rao conceptualized a system whereby drivers intentionally aim to hit potholes.

The idea behind Rao's "Beamer" concept is that the car's suspension is specifically designed to cope with pothole impacts, and once the pothole event occurs, a sensor goes off and your car radios the pothole's coordinates in to the authorities. For performing this service, the driver receives some type of tax credit or points on a BMW debit card.
While it might sound farfetched, it points towards the interesting possibilities of networked cars—a concept another entrant in the competition takes even further. With his "BMW Connected Park" concept, Xavier Gordillo makes an interesting observation:
Almost all the car brands are investigating the amazing possibilities [of car to car communication.] But I wasn't able to find any project that applies this technology while the car is parked. So my project is about how to apply this technology to the cars that are parked and take profit of what could be this huge net that will represent all the cars parked in all the streets of all the cities.
One facet of Gordillo's concept is that parked cars detect the proximity of other parked cars. This would essentially create a real-time database, one that all drivers could tap into, that would show where currently available parking spots are.

Anyone who knows anything about cars can tell you that the technology, weight, and complexity in such a system will be cost-prohibitive in the near future. I hit a pothole in my Mini Cooper S last year in Chicago at about 30mph that was enough to dent my rim and put it out of round. It also was so deep that it scraped the front lip beneath my bumper. There is no way in hell I'd ever intentionally hit one of these. I've had too many bent control arms, bad wheel bearings, and bent tie rods from these 3rd world roads.
The worst part is, the City makes it almost impossible to file a claim and if you do, they only pay half. Their policy is that it's half your fault for not avoiding the pothole, so they are only liable for the other half. Yeah that makes a lot of sense when the alternative is to swerve into traffic next to you or drive onto the curb and sidewalk.
As for the parking thing, I'd like my car to record who parks in front and behind me while I'm away so I know where to send the bill when I come out and find marks all over my bumper!

What's going on here? I didn't think Local Motors and BMW would be on that good of terms after BMW stole LM's RallyFighter design for their X6. Maybe someone should think about incorporating that BOSE shock absorber while they're at it.
While noble in intent, to run over potholes in the hope of adding them to the grid, it could actually be counter productive and socially irresponsible.
How often do you rely on the car infront swerving to indicate there is something on the road to be avoided. Not everyone has biblically expensive suspension, and seeing a car go straight over a pothole means the next guy will likely follow straight behind.
Why don't we design a better "high-tech" tarmac instead. I'm fairly sure the current recipe hasn't change in a while.
