Folks, we've just seen our first portfolio loaded up through Adobe's Tiltviewer. At first we found it neat--then freaking annoying as we couldn't easily zoom in on the thumbnail we wanted to see and caused unintended turning and tilting with errant mouse movements.

Check it out yourself and let us know what you think, a sample portfolio is here. Is Tiltviewer awesome, or annoying?
By the by the designer whose work we were trying to see (at the link above) is Liong Mah, the NYC-based knife designer behind Columbia River Knife & Tool's Eat'N Tool, a sort of multi-tool update to the venerable Spork.

New tech? This has been out and available for years and is the sort of obnoxious gimmickry that is on it's way out. To say the least.
I found this somewhat cool when I first came across it, but when it comes to functionality, I hate it. After a couple of clicks and zoom ins/outs I get nauseated and just want to leave the site altogether.
Uh, was airtight bought by adobe? Because this is from airtight interactive, the same people behind simpleviewer.
Well, this is not so new: I saw this effect years ago as a J-Album theme... and it was utterly useless. I can't figure out why one would use it for his personal portfolio! Ok, I can admit a little "randomness" and "wobbliness" to avoid the strict structure of a picture gallery, but this trick is annoying and not so meaningful. I also remember one portfolio site using tiltview in webpagesthatsucks :D
What is the point of viewing a 2d image in a 3d atmosphere? It only takes attention away from the actual images which the viewer is supposed to be focused on. Sure it may keep people looking at your portfolio for 30 seconds longer than they normally would, but they're looking at the shiny feature, not the images. And once everyone and their brother is using the same feature, your portfolio will be just as forgettable or memorable as it was before.
I could see this tool being more useful if you were viewing a 3D object that you can tilt and see more of it. The tilting is neat, but it doesn't really add any function.
I would reccomend lowering the level of tilt.. make it subtle
I believe tiltviewer is actually from Airtight Interactive, not Adobe. They offer several other viewer programs (like the popular Simpleviewer).
I also find the erratic movement a little distracting. I think a better method would be to use CoolIris instead. It functions as the same thing, however the movement seems smoother and more predictable.
Annoying as HELL. No added benefit whatsoever. And it decreased the ability to do what a portfolio is for, show off work.
i don't see the added value of using 3D rendering to show off 2d images
i looked at this for my portfolio when it came out. quickly decided it would be annoying. we want to show off OUR work, not a web designers....
Yea... super dumb. Would make sense to use it for a 3d model...
initially, it comes off as cool, but when you think about the application, it comes up short...and that is for both.
The portfolio begs the question: why do I need to look at skewed views of 2D images? The tool needs to answer why I would be turning nuts or bolts with my eating utensils? Wouldn't a knife make more sense? This is less useful than a cork-screw on a hobo knife.
Otherwise, nice finish for both with a great level of craftsmanship.
Adobe bought SimpleViewer and it's sister projects from airtightinteractive.com it seems. Tiltviewer is not new at all, it's been available for free for years and used on many websites.
