There are a couple videos on YouTube right now that nicely use a product lens on digital rights management. clay10mograf's "Interchangeability" tracks various music-playing consoles/devices through to their dematerialized form, and Adcbicycles "A Real-World DRM" plays for keeps with physical instantiations. I hate DMR as much as the next guy but the analogy is quite a bit off. When sharing a book or music CD the physical object is no longer in your possession. With digital media you retain possession while the other person also gains possession. If DMR worked on a “loan” basis – if you give someone music you no longer have it on your IPOD until you get it back from them it would be similar to how we associate to physical sharing. Likewise, you COULD give your physical (GASP!) iPod or Sony e-book reader to someone else to borrow for a while – this would be how sharing has worked in the past.
