A company named Fotowoosh has developed a killer technology that turns 2D photographs into 3D ones. Algorithms use visual cues in the photo to figure out where the horizon line is and where the vanishing points vanish to, then it "folds" the photo along those seams.
But enough tech-talk--this is the kind of thing that has to be seen to be believed; check out the video.
Applications for the technology have not yet been settled upon, but now that everyone owns digital cameras and has a hard drive full of photos, we're fairly certain this is not one of those technological breakthroughs that's going to fade away.

It is an amazing technology, but this clip is fairly old. Remember seeing it at least a year ago, and still I haven't heard about a commercial application of it.
I'd use it in putting products into environments quickly. take a photo of the environment you want your rendering in, and adjust the angle till you get one that matches your rendering.
now i can practice hardcore music with my friends inside those photos. kneat! i bet those clouds wont rain.
You guys need to get on top of things. I saw this clip months ago with some kids in the studio at school. This has been out and about, and yet nothing yet has come of it. It already faded away. Im not going to deny its cool, but it is old news.
This could add an impressive extension of the ol' Ken Burns Effect!
imagine a a paronamic pictures or 360 degree pictures I wonder how that would look like...
