Rodd Industrial Design -- Spray Cap Actuator without post-foaming

Rodd Industrial Design, based in Hampshire, UK, in partnership with spray technology specialist Lionstar Corp, has developed the first spray cap actuator that eliminates post-foaming of gel and foamed products. Licensed to leading cap and closure manufacturer Ten Cate Plasticum, for European sales, the first commercial application of the revolutionary new product is expected early next year.

Post-foaming occurs due to product build-up in a cap's internal channel, resulting in continued foam-up, clogged jets and lump emission. As well as being messy, spray quality is compromised, especially in the case of foodstuffs where product can go off inside the cap. To eliminate this problem, the new cap has a spray channel which is opened only momentarily whilst the user presses on the actuator.

A twin shot injection-moulded part, the new cap features a rigid plastic base and soft touch flexible elastomer top section, fitted closely to the base. When the actuator is pressed, the product is forced from the can under pressure. It deforms the flexible soft touch element into a controlled channel which then snaps shut as soon as the actuator is released, squeezing out all the product in the process.
